Reavers! A Wolves Upon the Coast Campaign

Adventure of Halfdan Session #2

We went out again the following day. An impromptu session opened up for myself and the dungeon master. We managed to rope Canyon and another player in too who joins part way through the session.

We decide to pursue some of my boast to "Make a suitable sacrifice to Ludek the protector of the mind" and in order to do this we learn two things.

  1. There is a man a day SW of us that is looking for men to help him secure his families farm from bandits with the promise of 3 fine Warhorses as payment.

  2. There is a temple to Ludek some 3 days South West of us. Though the exact location is not known.

So seeing an opportunity to go toward the temple to make the sacrifice and also to pick up something that likely would be a good sacrifice (a fine Warhorse is one of the most expensive animals in Wolves) we make our way there stopping at a town silent behind tall walls scrawled on it in latin scripted belgic words that have no meaning to us. We decide not to mess with this place and move on to a town on the river to meet the man Dattover who asked us to hunt down the bandits who took his farm.

We rapidly became convinced that Dattovere was not completely honest with us about what was happening at the farm but the promise of payment was too good to leave this alone.

The 3 of us with Dattovere and a hired man reached the farm a collection of a few buildings making a small courtyard with the horses held in a central barn. At this point my 2 compatriots made a pair of boasts. To kill a guard in a single blow and the other to not allow any bandits to escape with the horses and we went to work.

We managed to get the drop on the lone guard in a night time raid failing to kill him with a single attack but rapidly felling him with a second blow fortunate to avoid him alerting the entire farm to our presence.

We then went into the main building quickly going in and stabbing and spearing anyone we could killing 2 immediately and badly injuring a 3rd before the others started rousing from their sleep. A brawl ensued where myself and Aslof managed to fell the bandit leader but not before they named Dattovere and cursed him for his betrayal.

In the ensuing brawl all where injured except for Dattovere and 2 where downed but rescued before death but we slew all within the building largely with great attacks with a great sword vs these unarmored once sleeping foes.

As we where finishing off this group several other bandits from another building approached to try joining the fight before deciding against it and going to take the livestock and flee the farm.

Myself and Aslof standing alone as Dattovere healed the fallen immediately went to fight those taking animals and managed to drive them off without a real fight breaking out with them.

At this time victory in hand and outnumbering him 2 healthy fighters to 1 we turned to Dattovere and demanded further payment for his treachery. He looked ready to fight but we convinced him to give us the spoils of the fight including all the untouched armor and the weapons of the fallen and the 3 warhorses as loot.

Here we left victorious up a single successful boast of having recovered the horses.

It was a fun combat with a good discussion of the discipline of guards and what could be expected of guards given the weather (rainy) and who they where (bandits) and a lot of analysis of what we see guards do in specific instances.
